| Calculated Risk: A Level for Quake 2 |

Calculated Risk is a game level (also known
as a 'map') created to run within the Quake 2 engine. This project
was finished in 1999. Here is a view of the outside area. A walkway
winds around the back of the main building to the right. The structure
on the left holds a powerful weapon... and a "grinder" trap
for the careless player attempting to get that weapon. |
| |
|
| Calculated Risk places weapons
in locations where the risk of obtaining each weapon is directly proportional
to its power. Here is a view of another trap. Players may gain a powerful
weapon located on the top of the center cylinder.. by easily jumping
to it from the side ledges. However, they must be quick. Other players
may press one of three large buttons located in this room... dropping
the player into the center cylinder. An audio countdown (heard throughout
the entire level) begins, starting at ten. |
 |
| When it reaches zero,
a spectacular explosion eliminates the hapless player... with gibs
splashing against the inside of the glass and through the cracks.
Yes, yes... it IS evil... but it does tend to keep the onlookers amused. |

The risk-to-reward concept is not just limited to placing the good
stuff in traps. Some powerful or valuable items are also placed
in open areas that leaves the player vulnerable to multiple attacks
or sniping. Other weapons are located in areas where, once the player
has obtained the weapon, he/she must fight their way back out of.
This view is of a hard-to-defend tower that contains a good weapon...
but no ammo, and no health.

Here is a view of one part of the level, as seen from the outside
(in the "noclip" mode). The player doesn't see this view;
it is presented here to illustrate the layout and level construction.
