Atrocity is a game level created to run within the original Quake game engine. This level was developed and released way back in 1997, when the first-person shooter genre had just evolved into true 3-D.
Jeff of Jaaman Media developed all structures, lighting, enemy pathing, and game-play pacing (the scripted presentation of events).
Calculated Risk is a game level created to run within the Quake 2 engine. This project was finished in 1999.
The design concept of calculated risk includes a balancing of risk-to-reward. Here is a view of the outside area. A walkway winds around the back of the main building to the right. The structure on the left holds a powerful weapon, but the structure is exposed and vulnerable to attack. It also contains a "grinder" trap... for the careless player who is a bit too clumsy when attempting to get that valuable weapon.
